BCC ROCK CLUB PAST PROGRAM REVIEWS

***** 2009 Review *****

February 19 ....Keith gave us an excellent presentation on the tools he used to find oil for his company. There were twenty in attendance for this meeting, with five new members. If you missed the meeting, Bob has several extra copies of Keith's presentation.
January 15 ....Bob covered three items:
1. What's going on at Yellowstone, with all the earthquakes.
2. How are rocks age dated, via zircons.
3. New gold find in BCC area.

***** 2008 Review *****

December 18 ....Troy, from the USFS/BLM explained the plans for the new BCTs.
November 18 ....A mining geologist explaned the compliated proceedure used to close mines.
October 17 ....We had a BLM Archaeologst speak on Archaeology in the area.
February 21 ....Peter Church brought in a presentation on the industrial use of rocks.
January 17 ....Ruth and Richard did a presentation on the rocks of Turkey.

December 20 ....We had 17 in attendance, Jack gave us a three part presentation on a mine tour, state trust permit and xtal cave in Mexico.
November 15 ....Bob presented part #2, of how the SW US was constructed in proterozoic time and we reviewed the Tip Top mine trip.

September 20 ....Leonard Thomas ....gave us a presentation on non-orogenic granite that may be below the BCC area. What is it, where did it come from, how old is it, etc. Samples on display.
an interesting presentation on "The Black Canyon Trail" all the changes, loop trails, new maps, how is work progressing and plans for the future. One of our members, (Dan) brought in a rock with gold in it, he had just found near BCC. We all thought it was pyrite or metal shavings left by a tool, but when we looked at it under a 30X microscope we could clearly see it was gold with minor pyrite. What a find. March 15 ....Lori Greenstein...gave us a computer video presentation on "In search of Supernova Rock Art" and talked about other Indian rock art and the Arizona State Site Steward Program. We talked about the BCC Rock-of-the Month...Amphibolite. There were 16 in attendance for this meeting.
Feb. 15 ....We had 16 in attendance for this meeting.
* Minerals identification 101...by Dr. Ruth James
* Review of the new handheld Raman spectrometer. Fantastic new electronic tool to ID rocks and minerals in the field.
* Show & Tell ---How to use a metal detector to help identify rocks and minerals.
Jan 18...The speaker was Bob Pielage. We had 19 in attendance for this meeting.
* GPS 101
* How to use an electronic topo with GPS.
* What is desert rock varnish and how fast does it grow?
* Show & Tell ***** 2006 Review *****
December 14... Shelly Rasmussen...presented a slide show on the AFNM Rock Art. We had 20 in attendance for this meeting.
We also covered these subjects;
* Picture review of the Orizaba mine trip.
* How to extract Gold from hard rock with a Mortar & Pestal.
* Latest info of federal mining claims & the proposed copper state law.
* Explaned what are Liesegang rings.
November 16...There were 18 in attendance for this meeting.
Keith George gave us a presentation on the Orizabo Mine.
We did not have time for the GPS 101 & will do it at another meeting.
The new video projector worked great with our laptop.
October 19...We had 12 members at the meeting & the meeting items were;
1. Show & Tell,
2. Presentation on Diamonds of the Western US,
3. Pictures and info on the new mineral "Astorite".
April 20...Greg, gave us an interesting presentation.
March 16...We had a movie on world salt mining.
Feb. 16...Dr. Ruth James & Richard Smith gave a presentation on Dinosaurs. Planned a club field trip to the Richinbar gold mine on Saturday Feb.18.
January 11...We had 18 members at the wire wrap class...special thanks to Jim & Frank for help. ***** 2005 *****
December 8...We had 15 members at the meeting & the meeting items were;
1. How to stake & hold mining claims on federal land...Gary Herring
2. Major changes to the Mining laws...Bob Pielage
3. Plan a club field trip to the Richinbar gold mine...Gary Herring
4. Map night...Bring your maps, display all the new area maps & pictures...Bob Pielage
5. Plan and set dates for Club & Public Wire Wrap Class...Jim Perkins
6. Discuss construction of Library rock display cases.
7. We found the lost BCC petroglyphs thangs to Greg Watts & will show pixs.
8. We will also show pixs of Indian earings found recently.
November 17...Showed pictures of the Richinbar mine & other items. Gary Herring volunteered to be the meeting & programs coordinator for 2006, Leonard Thomas will be the phone calling coordinator and Bob Pielage will do field trips. The club will sponsor two Wire Wrap classes, one for the club and another for the public.
Oct. 20...Was a Show & Tell...New rocks, pictures, etc that were found this summer. Gary will have some Halite xtals. Bob will provide some pink Rhodonite samples from Colorado, display some fossils and coral from the BCC area?
June, July Aug & September...No summer meetings
May. 17...Gary Herring gave us a presentation on Micro Mounting and Identification of minerals. Bring your minerals to look at, he will have two microscopes. Bring in your Fossils from the field trip for Show & Tell.
The mystery rock for the month, its mostly black & red, doesn't fizz in acid, has bands, is very hard, heavy and is fairly common in the BCC area. Chris Anderson came closest to IDing the BIF (Banded Iron Formation) rock.

Feb. 17...The speaker was Nancy Stallard, from the BLM. She gave a excellent Power Point presentation on the Petroglyphs of the Agua Fria National. Monument. Several thousand people populated the area between AD 1250 & 1450. Their was twenty people in attendance.
The rock of the month was Aplite, of which Chris Anderson correctly identified the rock as a very fine grain granite.
Jan...No meeting because of flooding in the BCC area. ***** 2004 *****
